"The Lord asks..." An Isaiah 6:1-8 Call to Worship

The Lord asks, 
“Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?”
Into communities experiencing the pain of homelessness, hunger, and poverty.
“Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?”
Into a mission field that is in dire need of Christ’s love.
“Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?”
Into the world as the church to break down the walls of injustice and undo the divisions caused by fear of the stranger.

“Here am I; send me!” 
The old and the young, the energetic and the exhausted.
“Here am I; send me!” 
The rich and the poor; the unemployed and the overworked.
“Here am I; send me!” 
Servant leaders; employees and employers, stock brokers and broke shelf-stockers, CEOs and custodians, legislators and landscapers, doctors and duct workers, oil industry executives and gas station attendants.

Holy, Holy, Holy Lord! God of power and might. Heaven and earth are FULL of your glory. Hosanna in the highest! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the LORD. Hosanna in the highest!

Bless the saints. Bless the saints of the past whose actions echo into the present now. We  remember and celebrate the richness we inherit from them. Bless the saints. [toll a bell here] -observe silence now to remember the saints whose richness you have inherited- Bless the saints. Bless the saints who surround us now. We celebrate the connectedness of our communities that bear us up in times of trial, and whose actions both seen and unseen play a part in forming us as children of God. Bless the saints. Call to Worship: Traveling (Luke 10:1-11, 16-20)

My congregation will soon embark on a new worship series inspired by the work of the inimitable Dr. Marcia McFee, who provides excellent resources on worship at www.worshipdesignstudio.com . The worship series is called "The Outsider," and explores the many types of people on the margins that Jesus encounters (or inspires people to become) in the Gospel of Luke. I look forward to sharing further creative ideas I come across as we dream this worship series into life. On our first Sunday, we will journey with "the traveler" as we explore Jesus' sending of the Disciples in groups of two and our churches' responsibility to be havens to all kinds of travelers..
